The exploration of Western culture, the strong masculine image, related objects, and the physical appearance and body type associated with strength were key themes in my graduation project. (If you’re curious about the video, you can find the link in my profile.) During the exhibition, I was fortunate to hear the struggles of many men and understand why they felt compelled to become the “Marlboro Man.” This made me realize how significant this theme is, both to me and to many men. Why? Because I am no longer the “Marlboro Man.”
My work is not merely an homage to Western culture, but a journey to explore the coexistence of strength and vulnerability within it. Western style became more than just a cultural symbol for me—it became a powerful framework for expressing my inner story and the complexities of masculinity. I am gradually finding ways to visually express the anxiety and conflicts hidden behind the appearance of strength.
However, the themes I tackle are still deep and complex. While I am slowly unraveling the topics of the “Marlboro Man,” masculine image, framing, objects, and culture, there are times when time and material constraints slightly dampen my enthusiasm. Despite this, I still have enough time to think and act on these ideas.
